Laparoscopic mini gastric bypass surgery is the surgery that involves simple procedure with lower risk and good results for the patient. Mini gastric bypass or MGB surgery is developed as a modification done for the Billroth II procedure.

Choice of the Surgery

  • Mini gastric bypass surgery involves bypass of comparatively more intestine than that of the regular and standard gastric bypass surgery. So, it may lead to more mineral deficiencies and vitamin deficiencies.
  • The bile and digestive enzymes are not easily moved away from the stomach, like is done in the gastric bypass surgery. So, it may lead to bile reflux gastritis. Laparoscopic Minigastric Bypass Surgery

When the mini gastric bypass surgery is performed laparoscopically, a small incision is made on the abdomen. A chamber, which is tube shaped is partitioned at the esophagus base from the stomach. Then it is connected down to the small intestine. The surgery creates a narrow tube of the stomach to the lesser curvature right border. The small gut loop is then considered and taken and will be hooked to the long narrow tube. The hooking is done at the few centimeters, about 180 cm from the intestine starting. The loop reconstruction would be safe, when it is placed just lower part of the stomach. However, if the same is placed near or adjacent to stomach, the results can be disaster. When the low set loop reconstruction is used the chances of the bile reflux would be rare. Otherwise, bile reflux can be caused. Because of the simplicity and ease, the mini gastric bypass surgery is suggested as a working alternative to the RNY procedure.

Recovery

When the surgery is successful and everything is normal, patient can be discharged from the hospital before 24 hours of the surgery. However, it is usual to continue the stay from 3 days to 5 days of time. As soon as the surgery is completed, the patient is suggested by the doctors to get up and start moving to ensure that the blood clot can be prevented. Blood clot prevention would also be done further with the help of special machines or special stockings. After the surgery, liquid diet is suggested and slowly the diet is transitioned to solid foods.

The patient can get back to the normal activities and return to the work after a week, however 2 weeks of rest is good for recuperation.
