Rectal prolapse is the condition, in which the rectum gets protruded through the anus. It is occurred when the large intestine gets stretched to many inches. This problem usually occurred and experienced by the elderly women.

Symptoms for Rectal Prolapse

Causes for Rectal Prolapse

Treatment for Rectal Prolapse

Self care measures, like taking plenty of water or other liquids, high-fiber diet, taking and using laxatives, stool-bulking agents and using stool softeners can relieve the patient from the symptoms to some extent.

When the rectal prolapse condition cannot be treated with the conventional treatment methods, surgery is required to be done. Laparoscopic rectopexy is the preferred surgery to treat this condition. The surgery is needed to perform the repair of the rectal prolapse and places it to back to the normal position. The selection of the surgical procedure is done by the surgeon.

Before the Procedure

Usually, the patient needs to get ready for the surgery by performing the activities recommended. The patient has to take a shower with antibacterial soap so that it can help to prevent the germs to cause infection to the skin after the surgery. Other medications are to be stopped.

Laparoscopic Rectal Prolapse Surgery

The procedure selected to repair the rectal prolapse depends on various factors, like the cause suspected, preferences of the surgeon and the health condition of the patient. The laparoscopic surgery to repair rectal prolapse is started with the anesthesia given to the patient. Rectal prolapse surgery is performed through laparoscope technique and so needs only minimal incisions done on the abdomen. Laparoscope is inserted through one of the incisions made to view the internal structure of the organs, that are being operated. Special surgical instruments are also inserted through the other incisions to conduct the repair of the rectal prolapse.

The above laparoscopic procedure can be performed either through the abdomen or through the perineum. When it has to be done through the perineum, a small portion of the rectum and sigmoid is removed and will be attached to the remnant rectum to the colon or large intestine. This procedure is known as altemeier surgery.

Risks

There are multiple techniques and procedure used for the rectal prolapse surgery. Each of the surgery has its own complications, however, the general complications do include,

  • Bowel obstruction
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Damage occurred to the organs, nerves or other structures, nearby
  • Fistula, which is an abnormal connection occurred in between different parts in the body
  • Worsened constipation
  • Rectal prolapse recurrence

Recovery

The hospital stay will be minimal after the laparoscopic rectal prolapse surgery and the patient will be discharged after the patient recovers and regains the normal and usual bowel function. The patient is advised to take liquids and then to transition towards the solid foods. Lots of fluid consumption is recommended and some of the doctors also recommend using the stool softeners and once transitioned to the solid food, fiber rich diet has to take at least for a few weeks after the surgery is performed.
