Liver resection is surgical procedure, performed to remove a liver, partially. Liver resection is also called as hepatectomy. The operation is usually needed for some kinds of cancers that are related to the liver and for metastatic colorectal cancer. Only the unhealthy part, which is affected with the cancer, of the liver is removed, leaving the healthy part as it is. In case the liver, which is right side, has to be removed, the attached gallbladder has also been taken out.

After the liver has been cut and removed, the liver starts growing back to compensate the removed part and it is usually determined by the experienced surgeon.

Need for Liver Resections Procedure

Liver resection procedure is usually performed as a treatment for the colorectal cancer that has been covered the liver. When the procedure is performed, further spreading of the liver can be prevented. Sometimes, this surgery may not completely remove the cancer affected in the liver, but the long life can be benefit for the patient. The probability of living longer life for the patient can be increased to a better extent.

However, if the patient has colorectal cancer affected to both of the liver lobes, or in case, he or she has metastatic disease affected to the other parts of the body, liver resection may not recommended.

Liver Resections Procedure

In some cases, chemotherapy is given to the patient, in case the tumor is to be shrunk in the liver. In case the tumor becomes smaller one after the chemotherapy, surgery can be performed to remove the tumor.

The liver resection procedure is conducted, after general anesthesia given to the patient. The procedure is performed as a major surgery. Laparotomy is used for the access with the help of bilateral subcostal incision. The procedure usually takes two to five hours of duration. Usually, this procedure does not require blood transfusion.

After the procedure is performed, the patient may have to continue to stay at the hospital for next five to seven days of duration. Sometimes, it may stretch to 2 weeks too. After the patient is discharged from the hospital, follow-up care is important to ensure that the colorectal cancer would not possibly return.

There are multiple innovative techniques adapted for the liver resection. One of the techniques is radio frequency ablation combined with the surgery. The ablation helps the masses to be destroyed with the help of the heat. Sometimes two operations would be required for extensive cancers present in the liver and also in cases that the tumors are present in both the lobes in the liver. After the first liver resection operation, the liver is allowed to grow back to the normal size and then the second operation is conducted.

Post procedure treatment continues with radiation treatment or chemotherapy.

Risks involved in Liver Resections

The possible risks and complications that are associated with the liver resection are,

  • Bleeding that sometimes lead to urgent reoperation
  • Infection is possible, but rare
  • Possibility of biliary fistula
  • Scar tissue left after the surgery
