Spinal decompression is the pressure relieved on the nerves, which have got pinched, over the spinal column. The decompression can be done either by surgical procedure or non surgical procedure. Surgical procedure is opted to be done, when the conventional non-surgical procedure found to be of no help. Non surgical procedures are usually conducted for relieved the chronic back pain, like degenerative spondylolisthesis, sciatica, disc bulge, disc herniation, isthemic.

Non surgical procedures

Non surgical procedures are used to treat the spinal decompression and it these procedures do fail, the surgical procedures are considered.

Mechanical traction is one procedure performed non surgically for the spinal decompression. It makes use of the mechanical traction device. It is applied over the computer that controls the angle of distraction of the disc and force. It then reduces the natural propensity of the body, so that the external force can be reduced. Using this, muscle spasm also may be generated. The traction force is applied to the spinal column’s disc and reduces the intradiscal pressure.

Inversion therapy is also one of the important non surgical treatment used for the spinal decompression. The mechanical traction is applied by hanging upside down. This practice is safe enough, because there would be no need for the anesthesia or injections. Spinal decompression is done by applying one minute decompression. This decompression must be given alternatively with one minute gap as a relaxation cycle. So, the total time required for the treatment would be 30 minutes. It makes use of logarithmic decompression curve. When the decompression is applied the disc pressure is reduced and the nucleus pulposis is given vacuum type of effect. At that point of time, nutrition is also diffused to the disc,  so that the healing of annulus fibrosus can be done.

The non surgical procedure for the low back is also given. The patient has lie down on the stomach or back over the decompression table. Then straps would be placed over the lower chest and waist. If the problem is existing with the neck, the patient is lied down on the back. Rubber pad pair is kept behind the neck. This treatment makes the patient comfortable and easily tolerated, so this treatment makes the patients to enjoy.

The treatment has many of the changing versions. It includes range of motion or ROM decompression, articulation spinal decompression. Such treatments help the doctors to enable to do the necessary adjustments of the spinal posture of the patient, while the decompression is going on. When the postures of the spine are changing, the decompressive pulling attempts force so that it reaches into the tissues and spinal areas.

Surgical Procedure

There are several surgical procedure existing and performed for the spinal decompression. These are

  • Microdiscectomy, which is also called as a minimally invasive procedure. It involves the removal of small part of a herniated nucleus pulposus, through laser or surgical instruments. It makes use of the loupe or operating microscope for magnification of the internal structure for an enlarged view.
  • Laminectomy is another surgical procedure used. It is an invasive procedure. Vertebrae bone is removed in the shape of a small arch from the spine. It can alleviate the pinching nerve pressure. This procedure is usually opted by the patients, for whom relief is not experienced from the conservative and non surgical treatments.
