Breast reduction surgery is also known as reduction mammoplasty. Breast consists of mammary gland, which has the physiological function to secrete the milk, while lactating. The surgical procedure involves reduction of the breasts in size, by the removal of extra fat, adipose tissue and skin. Sometimes glandular tissues are also needed to be removed.

  • Suffering from the illnesses, like systemic illness

Pre-surgical Assessment

The cosmetic surgeries do need a thorough and in detailed pre-operative assessments. The first assessment is the medical history of the candidate, followed by physical examination. The followed assessment will be psychological assessment, which is very important for the candidates, as they might get into the depression, if the expected results are not achieved.

Types of Breast Reduction Surgery

  • Lollipop or vertical scar incision
  • A very small vertical incision has been made at inferior outer part of the hermisphere of the breast. The technique is suitable for the reduction of the small amounts of the skin and fatty tissue. The technique suits to the women, who have small amount of fat tissue to be removed.

  • Free Nipple Graft
  • The area that is surrounded around the nipple on the breast is called areola. The nipple areola complex has to be cut. Then the same area is shifted towards up ensuring that the shift is done without the glandular pedicle, nerve supply and blood supply. The technique is good and suitable for the women, who have larger breasts, chain smokers and diabetic. When the tissue has the tendency of necrosis or death also this technique is preferred.

  • Periareolar Incision
  • Periareolar incision is also called as inferior pedicle technique and it is considered to be popularly followed technique. A small cut is to be made along the curve of the outer border of the region of the areola. The cut is then made towards down along the hemisphere curve. Then the skin, adipose tissue, glandular tissue and fat are to be removed. Then the skin is stitched tight. As the nipple areolar complex will get shifted towards upward direction, the centre is coincided for the breast and the new breast becomes firm.

  • Horizontal Scar
  • A very small incision is made on the way of inferior mammary fold. The incision is so small that it is almost invisible. Oversized breast women can benefit from this technique.

  • Liposuction
  • This technique also needs only a small incision and involves the removal of fat to reduce the breast size. The technique is well suited for the women, who are thin and breast is heavy. The scar remained will be very small and healing is faster in this technique.

Breast Reduction Surgery

Initially the patient is given the general anesthesia to asleep and feels no pain during the surgery. The surgery takes only 3 to 5 hours of time. The candidate is laid on the back. While the breast size has been reduced, the patient is taken to the sitting position sometimes, to ensure that both the breasts are symmetric.


The surgery has very fast recovery that the patient can get back to the normal and regular activities right after the next day. However, strenuous activities should not be started until the end of three weeks, following the surgery. Normal diet also can be started from the next day of the surgery. Sports brassiere is suggested to wear for better fit. Fading of the scars take about 6 months and total outcome and effect of the surgery can be found by 6 months.
