HIFU or High Intensity Focused Ultrasound is also referred as FUS or Focused UltraSound. HIFU is a hyperthermia therapy medical procedure performed to destroy the damaged or diseased tissues. Destruction of the cells is done by applying ultrasound energy focused with high intensity and locally heating.

HIFU is the medical procedure conducted in hyperthermia therapy, which is one class of clinical therapies. Hyperthermia therapy makes uses of temperature in order to treat the diseases. It involves non-invasive or minimally invasive method for directing acoustic energy directly into the body.

Procedure

HIFU clinical procedure is usually performed along with the imaging procedure. Such conjunction helps the planning and targeting treatment to be enabled before the ablative levels of therapeutic ultrasound energy is applied. The procedure involves MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging for guiding. When this technique is used the procedure would be also called as MRgFU or Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound.  When the diagnostic sonography is made use in the procedure, the technique would be called as USgFUS or USgHIFU or Ultrasoud-guided focused ultrasound.

For the HIFT therapy, anesthesia is usually not required, however, surgeons give it as it is recommended. HIFU therapy involves the ultrasound beams to focus high energy on the tissues that are diseased. The focus of the ultrasound is done through phased arrays, curved transducer or lens. The focus is done just like a light ray is focused through magnifying glass. The focus can be done either geometrically or electronically. Geometrical focus is done through a lens or by means of a transducer that is spherically curved. Electronic focus is done by adjustment of relative phases present in the elements through a transducer arrays. The electronic signals are dynamically adjusted to the phased array elements to steer the beam to various locations.

The temperature of the tissues will be raised to higher levels to 650 to 850C. The destruction of the tissues that are diseased is done by coagulation necrosis. Multiple shots are applied and the number of shots applied will be according to the physician’s design of the protocol. Precise ablation of the tissues that is diseased gets achieved from the treatment. Further higher temperatures are to be avoided, so that the boiling of liquids present in the tissues would be prevented. The surgery involves non-invasive method and so it is called as non-invasive HIFU surgery.

Medical Applications

Ultrasound is used in many therapeutic applications for bringing the agitation into the body through heat. It makes use of higher energies than that of the diagnostic ultrasound. Various ranges of frequencies are used in the treatment.

The focused ultrasound is used for generating high levels of localized heating in order to treat the tumors, both benign and malignant and also the cysts. This FUS of HIFU uses only lower frequencies than that of the ultrasounds used in the diagnostic processes, however still are higher energies.
