Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty are one of the two approaches, performed commonly for vertebral augmentation. It is of minimally surgical procedure performed for vertebral fracture stabilization as well as for treating to prevent the spinal deformity prevention and pain for the patient.

Vertebral Body Fracture

When the vertebral body gets fractures, the regular and normal shape of the bone, which is in rectangle, will be compressed and thereby pain will be felt by the patient. These compression fractures, would usually result in one or more vertebrae to be collapsed, in the spine. These are usually caused from the osteoporosis. Osteoporosis disease is the loss of regular and normal mass, density and density of the body and thereby increasing the porousness of the bone, so that the bone will become too vulnerable to wear out and break. Sometimes weakening of the vertebrae is also caused because of cancer.

Vertebral Fracture Surgery

The pain caused from the vertebral fracture and prevention of further collapse can be achieved from two kinds of procedures that are minimally invasive procedures. These procedures performed are kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty. If the pain from the fracture is not relieved after several weeks with the treatment of pain medication and also with brace immobilization. During the procedures, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, cement is placed into the vertebral fracture. It needs a small or minimally invasive incision done in the skin, which are guided through fluoroscopy under x-ray.

Though, there are many of the procedures available for vertebral augmentation, balloon kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are the commonly preferred and performed procedures. It is because the success rate of these procedures is about 90% in relieving the fractured vertebrae pain.

Need of the Surgery

Usually, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are performed for the candidates, who have the following symptoms.

  • Candidates, who are elderly and also likely to have healing of impaired bone, after a fracture is occurred
  • Candidates, who have malignant tumor and result in vertebral compression
  • Candidates, who have treatment of steroid, for a long time or sometimes, metabolic disorder, because of osteoporosis

The surgery will have increased success probability, when it is performed before eight weeks of the fracture occurrence.

Vertebroplasty Procedure in India

The vertebroplasty vertebral augmentation procedure involves only external reduction sometimes no manipulation at all for the fracture. When fracture has to be reduced externally, patient would be physically manipulated, while the patient has been placing over the operating table. It is usually done before the injection of the material to the site of the fracture.

Procedure

During the procedure, cement mixture is injected into the fracture, through the image guidance. It makes use of hollow needle to perform the same.

Kyphoplasty Procedure in India

The name kyphoplasty is given, because the procedure involves to attempt is done for the reduction of the kyphosis that is usually resulted from the collapse of vertebral body.

Procedure

During the procedure, instruments or surgical devices are inserted into the vertebra that is broken. Then the broken vertebra will be reduced from the body collapse to get back to the original shape. A central void would be created after the instrument or surgical device is removed. The void would be filled using some material called stabilizing material. The material placed helps the fracture to stabilize and also to improve the shape of the vertebra.

Kyphoplasty is considered more potentially, when compared with vertebroplasty, especially, while correcting the wedging and vertebral collapse. This consideration is done, if the wedging is decided to be done before 6 weeks of the duration, when the fracture gets sustained.
