Total Hip Replacement or THR procedure is conducted for the candidates, who suffer from any kind of hip arthritis. THR improves the total quality of life. It is conducted to remove the femoral head entirely and the hip that causes the trouble is replaced with a new and artificial hip. Then the prosthesis or implant is placed with a new socket and a new ball. The new ball here is attached to the stem and it would get machined in the bone of hip. The implant used for the hip replacement would wear out in some period of time. So, on an average, the implant lasts for over 15 to 20 years, but for the younger candidates, this period is often less. After it is wearing out, revision of the same hip replacement procedure would be considered.

Artificial hip replacement is usually performed in two ways. These are umcemented prosthesis and cemented prosthesis. Both of this prosthesis is made from the two parts.

  • The stem portion or femoral component that is used for replacing the femoral head. It is made of stem with metal and has a metal ball in its end.
  • The socket portion or acetabular component that is used for replacing the acetabulum.

Some of the prosthesis approaches use ceramic ball that get attached to the metal stem. The bearing is usually done with acetabular component, which is a metal shell having inner socket liner made with plastic. The plastic used in this is highly wear resistant, as it is cross polyethylene of ultra high molecule weight and are highly cross linked.

Cemented prosthesis – This prosthesis makes use of PMMA or Poly Metha Acrylate cement for attaching the metal to the hip bone.

Uncemented prosthesis – The uncemented prosthesis makes use of fine mesh that has many holes. This mesh is touched to the bone on its surface. The mesh helps the bone to grow naturally and get into the mesh, so that it can become a part of the bone.

Post total hip replacement

After the total hip replacement, physiotherapy and rehabilitation are recommended, as it plays vital role for any candidate. The purpose of these processes are increasing the movement to get back to the normal activities and helps to return to these activities quick enough. After the replacement and before the discharge from the hospital, the candidate is given with the list of the exercises, which are recommended by the physiotherapist. These exercises are to be done in the regular intervals. The strength and the mobility is improved when done regularly at home. Climbing and descending the stairs is an important activity that has to be very well taken care by the patient. So, ascending and descending the stairs are clearly shown to the candidates.
