Cysts can be found frequently even from the normal healthy people. Through liver cysts are present in the healthy people, they hardly show any symptoms. When the cysts become prominent or larger, in such cases, the treatment would be necessary.
Cysts in the liver are of different types. Hepatic cysts are the non-parasitic cysts that are usually of asymptomatic having no abnormal hepatic functions. But the symptoms will be predominant, when the size of the cysts start growing.
Usual symptoms of liver cysts are,
- Pain
- Bleeding in the cysts
- Digestive complaints that can be unexplained
- Infections
- Rupture
- Intracystic hemorrhage
Polycystic Liver Disease (PLD)
PLD is the combination of multiple cysts that are scattered at multiple places of the normal liver tissues. It is usually associated with polycystic kidney disease. PLD is classified as two groups, based on the number of cysts, their distribution and locations. These are Type-1 and Type-2. Type-1 PLD is the presence of the multiple cysts in large numbers, usually located at the liver anterior segments. Type-2 is the presence of multiple cysts that are small but are distributed to the entire liver that includes the segments of posterior. Type-1 PLDs can be handled and managed to be removed through laparoscopic surgical procedure. But the Type-2 cannot be removed laparoscopically, as these are hard to be located and reached through the laparoscope. These cysts are difficult to be differentiated from the structures of the hepatic venous structures.
Hydatid Cysts
Hydatid cysts are other kinds of cysts present in the liver. These cysts can be operated laparoscopically using any one of the two techniques called unroofing and total pericystectomy.
Treatment for Liver Cysts
If the cysts are found in the liver and show severe symptoms, surgery is needed and the surgery includes usually the removal of the cyst wall. In case only the fluid is removed from the cyst, it may be refilled after the surgical procedure is performed. In addition to that, there will increased risk of infection to the patient. So, removal of the fluids from the cysts is not recommended and the total wall of the cyst is preferred to be removed. The surgical treatment is preferred to be performed through the laparoscope, by many of the surgeons.
Procedure for Liver Cysts
Small incisions are done on the abdomen initially, after the patient is given the anesthesia. Later, the laparoscope, which is long, thin and flexible tube that consist of a video camera attached to its one of the tips that is passed through the organ inside the body. The video camera captures the video in front of it, inside the organ on the video monitor. The surgeon looks into the internal structure of the liver and the cysts are identified. a small wall of the cyst is usually removed. The result will be that the fluid present in the cyst will get drained out towards the abdominal cavity. The liquid is then drained out of the body, after it is reached to the abdominal cavity.
Complications and Risks
The major risks associated with the laparoscopic surgery of the cysts present in the liver are,
- Bleeding, which can either be minor bleeds or major bleeds
- Bile leakage
- CO2 embolism, through rare in the laparoscopic surgeries
Recovery
Since the laparoscopic procedure is the minimally invasive technique to perform the surgery, there will be minimal complications both during the procedure performed as well as after the surgery is performed. The recovery will be faster after shorter hospital stay.
Reoccurrence
The recurrence rates of the cysts in the liver are varied and depend on the patients.
