Hiatus Hernia is a condition, from which a part of the stomach is pushed upward through the diaphragm. Usually, diaphragm consists of hiatus with a small opening, through which the esophagus or the food tube is passed in order to get connected to the stomach. When the stomach is pushed up through the opening, hiatal hernia is caused.
Most of the candidates, do not know that they have the heiatal hernia and it is usually discovered by the doctors, accidentally, while checking the body for other condition.
Types of Hiatus Hernia
There are different types of Hiatal Hernia existing, as the following.
- Sliding Hiatal Hernia
- Rolling Hiatal Hernia
Sliding hiatal hernia is the most usually occurring hiatal hernia condition. In this condition, the gastro-esophageal junction gets moved combined with some part of the stomach above the diaphragm.
Rolling hiatal hernia is also called as paraesophageal hiatus hernia. This is the condition, occurring while the some small part of the stomach gets moved or herniated towards the esophageal hiatus. The herniated part gets lied aside the esophagus. It makes the gastro-esophageal junction not to move. It is a rare condition.
Symptoms of Hiatus Hernia
Most of the hiatal hernia cases do not show any symptoms. However, the general symptoms that are possible are the following.
- Heart burn caused from backing up of the acid and food into the esophagus, because of large hiatal hernia
- Chest pain
- Asthma
- Bleeding
- Obstruction
- Pain while swallowing
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Stomach twisting
Treatment for Hiatus Hernia
Usually, small medication and self care measures should relieve from the symptoms of hiatal hernia. Usually, the recommendations from the doctors include antacids, acid production reducers, proton pump inhibitors. However, for larger and severe conditions, surgery will be required.
Laparoscopic Hiatus Hernia Surgery
The surgery is done through the laparoscopical method and so it is named. Laparoscope is a long, thin and flexible tube that consists of a video camera at one end, which passes inside the body. The procedure performed here is the ‘Nissen’ hiatal hernia procedure. Anesthesia is given to the patient. Then the surgeon makes two incisions on the either sides of hernia. First incision is made to insert the laparoscope and the second one for inserting surgical instruments. The defect is located in the diaphragm, through the video camera and monitor and then the procedure is started. During this procedure, the sphincter is tightened up, by wrapping the stomach around the lower end part of the esophagus.
In some of the cases, the laparoscopic procedure would not be possible. In such circumstances, the procedure has to be converted from the minimally invasive surgery to the open surgery. During this surgery, sequential compression stockings are sometimes applied to prevent the blood clots forming in the legs. The same stockings may be continued after the surgery too. For open surgery an incision is done on the middle part of the abdomen.
Recovery
After the surgery and sometimes when the symptoms are mild, the following self care measures can make the patients to recover faster.
- Completing dinner at least 3 hours of bed time
- Eating small meals frequently
- Sitting right after eating, but not lying down
- Avoiding alcohol
- Avoid heartburn triggering foods
- Limiting the consumption of the fatty foods
