Nose Surgery

Nose surgery or rhinoplasty is conducted by the qualified and experienced ENT surgeon.  The surgery is performed usually, as an outpatient basis and the patient is given usually local anaesthesia.

The surgery starts with small incisions made inside the nose, for accessing the cartilage and bones, which support the nose.

Recovery

Usually, the nose surgery can be done as an outpatient basis, however, if any other additional surgeries are to be done along with this surgery, the patient has to stay in the hospital for that night. The scars won’t be visible, as the surgery is done through inside the nose. Some of the cartilage or bone is removed according to the requirement or sometimes tissue might be added. The new tissue added could be either from the patient’s another part of the body or from synthetic filter. After the reshape and rearrangement of the cartilage and bone, the tissue and also is then re-draped on the nose structure. The new shape is supported by placing the splint outside. For large noses, the overly nose is usually reduced through removing cartilage or bone. If needed, additional cartilage grafts are used. For the graft, cartilage is taken from the septum, which is at the middle partition of the nose. Sometimes, it is needed to be taken from the ear of the patient. Through it is rare, a small section of cartilage from rib can also be taken to use. In cases that the nasal spectrum has got deviated, the straightening is usually done and then the projection from inside the nose is also done by reducing it, so that the breathing can be improved.

Sometimes open rhinoplasty is also done, by making incision on the narrow tissue strip, which acts as nostrils separation or underside of the nose. So, this incision will also be not visible.

After the nose has been restructured to the desired structure and shape, the tissue and also the nasal skin will be re-draped. Finally, all the incisions are covered and closed. When necessary, additional incisions are also required to be done along the nostril natural creases for altering the size. The surrounding area of the nose will be bandaged then.

Recovery

The surrounding areas of the nose wall will be swollen and bruised and will continue for a few weeks. The patient can use cold compress on the nostril area. Pain killers can be used if there is more pain, but it must be administered by the doctor. The patient is not supposed to conduct any strenuous activities like lifting heavy weights, etc., after the surgery, at least for a few weeks. While sleeping, the head has to be maintained raised. Healing takes considerably more time, so the numbness and swelling may continue for the nose for months together. The final results can be found after one year.
