Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy surgery is performed for the removal of the kidney from the human body using small incisions. Along with the kidney, the surrounding fat and the lymph nodes are also removed. In certain cases, the near part, adrenal gland is also affected and so sometimes has to be removed.

When the surgery is not treated in time, the signs and symptoms can become intensified. If the kidney cannot remove all the waste present in the body, the waste is increased in the body. The excessive waste may cause confusion, dizziness or seizures. When the toxic waste is increased beyond the normal levels, it can be life-threatening too.

Advantages

  • Since the surgical procedure makes use of laparoscopic approach, all the benefits of the minimally invasive technique can be obtained.

Disadvantage

  • Since laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is the surgical procedure that is relatively new, it is technically challenging to some extent. So, it is not performed in all the centers.

Before the Surgery

Informed consent is given to the patient to describe the tests, procedures, treatments that are needed for the patient. Risks and benefits are also indicated in the consent. So, it is important for the patient to go through and understand thoroughly and if there are any doubts, the same must be discussed with the surgeon team.

Procedure

A small tube called IV is kept in the vein for supplying the liquids or medicine. The same IV is used to supply the antibiotics for prevention of the infection. General anesthesia is given to make the patient sleep and feel no pain. The same IV might be used to give the general anesthesia. A tube or a mask might be placed just below the throat. The actual procedure starts with small incisions of around 3 to 5 to be given nearer to the kidney. Carbon dioxide is filled in the abdomen, so that the muscles can be gently lifted away from the nearby organs. It is done to help the doctor to have a better view of the kidney. The tissues present around the kidney are cut to remove it. Several incisions are made to cut the kidney into small pieces. Then the small pieces are removed. Later, adrenal gland may also require be removing, basing on various conditions. The adrenal gland is the one that produces hormones and stays above the kidney. Finally the incisions are closed using medical glue or stitches and the site is covered with the bandages.

After the Surgery

After the surgery is completed, the patient is taken to another room and let to take test, until completely awake. The patient is closely monitored by the care giver to ensure there are no medical complications. A drain, which is placed during the surgery to drain out extra fluid, generated from the wound to prevent the infection would be removed once the draining is stopped from the wound. You may be advised to get up and walk around on the same day of the surgery or the next day. The movement is advised, as it can prevent the blood clots. Some of the exercises are also recommended to be performed on the bed.

Risks

  • Excessive bleeding may be happened
  • Infection may occur to the operated organs
  • Organs, blood vessels, muscles or nerves may be damaged
  • Chest or should pain may be experienced because of the carbon dioxide used while the surgery is performed, and the pain may continue for 1 to 2 days
  • The other kidney may not function, as it used to before
