Lumbar tumor is one of the spinal tumors. In macro level, the spinal tumors are classified as primary tumors and secondary tumors. Primary tumors are the tumors occurred in the spinal structures and secondary tumors are spread from anywhere in the body to the spine as metastases of cancers.

The tumors can be either benign or malignant. Benign tumors are easy to handle, as they do not spread to the other parts of the body. However, it is possibly a significant problem, based on its size, location, blood supply and adjacent structures and various other factors. In most of the cases, benign tumors are successfully treated. When it comes to the malignant, it refers to the cancer tumor that can possibly spread to the surrounding parts of the body. Intramedullary tumors start and grow from the inside the spine and examples for the same tumors are ependymoma, astrocytoma and hemangioblastoma. Other kind of tumor is intradural extramedullary tumors are the tumors, which start and continue growing within the spinal canal, however, out of the nerves and spinal cord. The examples of these tumors are meningioma and schwannoma. The other type of tumors are epidural tumors, which start and continue growing in between the vertebrae or bones present in the spinal column and surrounding dural sac to the spinal cord and also between the nerve roots.

Symptoms

When the lumbar tumor is affected to the spine, the following symptoms are found.

  • Pain that becomes severe and possibly become worse, though treatment is taken
  • The pain will create another symptoms like weight loss or fatigue
  • The radicular symptoms may also be occurred, with weakness, numbness and pain and the same are extended towards the legs
  • One of the severe symptom can be loss of coordination of the bladder and bowel and also inconsistence

Diagnosis

A tumor biopsy is considered to be the best way for determining and checking whether the spinal tumor is normal one or a cancerous one. The tissue is removed as a small piece, by conducting a surgery or simply by a needle. The tissue is then tested by viewing under a microscope to check the presence of the cancerous cells.

Procedure

The tumor is determined to be a cancerous tumor or non-cancerous tumor, or benign tumor or cancerous tumor. After or before the radiation or chemotherapy the surgical intervention is needed to be done, no matter, which kind of tumor it is. The tumor has to be removed to the best possible extent, without creating any problems, like potential neurological problems. A minimally invasive method is used for the tumor removal and makes use of the METRx system. The surgery is done, based on the location and the size of the spinal tumor.
