Face lift is a cosmetic surgery preferred by many old women to look young, by rejuvenating the face features. The surgery stands to be in sixth position among the surgeries performed for improvement of aesthetic appearance. Face lift surgery is also called as rhytidectomy. The muscles and skin of the face usually lose the natural elastic characterics and tone as the human grows and age progresses.

Before the Procedure

The candidate is explained of what care to be taken before the procedure by the team of the surgery. Smoking has to be stopped at least one or two weeks of the surgery as well as at least two weeks after the surgery. Smoking is important to be avoided, as there can be problem of blood flow inhibition to flow into the skin and the healing can be affected. Certain medication like, aspirin are to be avoided and other medical treatments are also to be stopped for a while.

Face Lift Surgery

Face lift procedure is slightly different for different candidates, as every face consist unique contour and shape. Procedure starts with a local anesthesia given, with sedative combined, to the patient. So, the patient would be awake but does not feel the pain, during the procedure. However, some of the surgeons give general anesthesia. There are various procedures performed.

SMAS or Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) Lift

Small incisions are made that begins near the temple and curves at hairline and passes through earlobe and then ends at the hairline bottom. Another small incision is made under the chin, which is done for tightening the skin at the neck. Then the skin is separated from the muscles and fat underneath. Excess fat is trimmed or suctioned out through liposuction procedure. It leads to sleeker look of the face. SMAS layer is present underneath the skin. This layer is tightened by folding it tight also by pulling back over to itself. This process is done to lift the cheeks as well as let the jawline to look more defined and also helps to firm the neck.

Then the skin is pulled back over the area and later the excess skin is removed with the help of laser or knife. Finally, the incision will be covered and closed using tissue glue, stitches or sutures. Stitching is done within the hairline to hide it inside the hair. The entire surgery needs 2 to 4 hours of time and the length of the time depends on the muscle and tissue work extension and also total number of procedures performed.

There are also facelift procedures performed, called Composite Facelift, Deep Plane Facelift and The Mid Facelift.
